Suitability report: P5
HH magazine is a Hip-Hop magazine which aims to spread awareness and tell people our venue and dates which the artist in the genre of Hip-Hop are doing. During the process of my magazine i had to change things up along the way which were unexpected but i ended up getting there.
Strengths & weaknesses - front cover & double page spread
I feel that the colours and the message that the magazine is trying to put forward work very well and you can tell that its Hip-Hop orientated magazine through the colours and fonts that i have used. The Q and A with my model feels and puts across a message of what it feels like to be in the music industry and what it feels like to be a hip hop artist, this is expressed through the emotion of Cleo Harvey.
Another strength are the fonts and colours of fonts. This is because it shows the diversity of my magazine. The use of the colour gold reflects the rural atmosphere of my magazine and shows its importance as gold is a colour of wealth. This appropriate for my target audience as it makes them feel special to be able to buy the magazine.
Another strength is the location of my double page spread. I chose an image from the internet, which is a graffiti wall. I feel this was a good choice because it is colourful and makes the model stand out (especially as he is dressed in black). Hip-hop uses graffiti a lot in music videos for example, therefore this location is conventional to the genre. This is appropriate for my target audience because they can identify the location and link it to the genre. They also may go to this location as it is attractive.

The picture above is my front cover I feel that this is very suitable for the target range I am targeting due to the colour and the wording involved is very easy and simple to gather, One strength of my front cover is its very catchy and stands out as the way the model is presented makes it very effective and will make people want to buy it more, i also feel the big boldness of the title will grab the audience attention as it is a big font and very easy to read and see. One improvement that I could make on my magazine is I could make it more colour coordinated as there are a lot of different textures and colours involved , all the colour i feel are very effective but I feel that I've used to many colour on my front cover and maybe I should have just stuck with 1 or 2. Another strength is my magazine is very information based and even by looking at it you can see due to the advertisement and the information that is being given off.
One thing that didn't go to plan is the photos that i took could have been a better quality and better in general, the reason for this is where i took my photos the location wasn't the best and the lighting wasn't good enough, however Photoshop did allow me to make the photo a better quality and it allowed me to bring it out on my front cover and double page spread.
Another weakness of my front cover could be composition. All of my cover-lines are spaced at the top of the front page and this might be confusing for my target audience. They may not be able to take everything in and therefore be put off buying the magazine.
A final weakness could be the many colours that I have on my front cover and double page spread. It could be distracting and doesn't help to create a brand identity for my magazine, which could influence my target audience.
During the process of my magazine I had to use all different types of tools and programs along the way, here is evidence of me using Photoshop to create my final piece (Double page spread and front cover) Photshop really helped me along the way as it allowed me to edit my picture on to my front cover and double page spread, it also allowed me to make my photo look better as the lighting wasn't the best when I took it. To help me do this I had to use many a tool on PS to help my final piece look the best it could be.

One tool on Photoshop that I used was the magnetic lasso, the magnetic Lasso was very important in the running up to my finished piece as it allowed me to edit photos and writing which allowed my front cover and double page spread to look very neat and fit for purpose. I used this tool to cut out my artist from the original background and place him on a different, chosen background.
I chose to use an urban background instead, because it reflects the genre of hip-hop and is typical of where these artists would produce music videos. This links to the client brief because it was taken from a location (Camden) in North London and reflects the upcoming music scene. It was also own original content.
This is another example of me using photoshop to create my media product , as you can see I am using effects to make the writing in my masthead the right colour and right size. I chose to make my masthead the biggest font because it is the most important text on the front cover and helps to create brand image. It also stands out to my audience. I chose the colour white to stand up against the black background, which again makes it dominating and could increase revenue from readers. This colour choice challenges typical conventions of hip-hop and sheds more of a positive light on hip-hop. This links to the client brief as it reflects the vibrant, upcoming music scene in North London.

In the photo it is showing that I am using the magnetic wand tool, this tool helped me move my model by highlighting it and moving it onto the back ground of my double page spread and front cover. This tool was really effective as it helped me move my model over quite fast and efficiently. I changed the background to a graffiti location as Hip-hop uses graffiti a lot in music videos for example, therefore this location is conventional to the genre. This is appropriate for my target audience because they can identify the location and link it to the genre. This links to the client brief as it was a location in North London, therefore is promoting North London as a music scene.

I used the opacity tool and rectangle tool to make sure that the text could be seen clearly. It also shows the background/location and is creative. This makes the location and article dominant - the article is about the artist discussing how he became famous and why he loves the genre of hip-hop. It reflects the music scene in North London, which is a clear client requirement from the brief. I used the colour black as it suggests importance, which is exactly what the article is - especially for music fans. Also the vibrant colours of the background reflect the positive article - this links to the brief as it shows the vibrancy of the music scene developing locally.
I used the drop shadow text tool on one of my cover lines especially "Koko 11th of May, 50% of all tickets" to reflect one USP aspect of my magazine. Koko's is a North London venue, so this links to the brief. It also emphasises the 50% off element as it means that readers are more likely to buy and reader the magazine as they have an incentive to buy it. I chose to add this tool on this cover-line of the others. It also links to the brief as it shows the genre of the talent and the types of venues across North London.

I played around with the layer tool so that I could order my magazine. I chose this quote from my article to engage readers and entice them to read it. I chose the colour red as it is a fiery colour and represents the fiery personality of my artist. It also reflects his passion for the music that he creates. This is all original content, which links to the brief. "The eye of destruction" suggests a storm is coming, which reflects the vibrant upcoming music scene. Similarly, the word "Eye" suggests that there's going to be a strong focus on this specific part of North London.
This is my model of my magazine this follows the codes and conventions of the brief as the model represents the genre that I am doing (Hip-Hop). The was the model is also looking shows calmness and being cool. This follows the codes and conventions of the Genre due to the way the model is dressed and he looks like a Hip- Hop artists.
This is my Magazine title, this follows the codes and conventions of the brief as the font suits the Genre as its big and bold and due to my research of my competitors most of my competitors have this font and this is why i used it. This font follows the codes and conventions as the font is suited for the genre as expresses it is some ways.

This is my Double page spread I feel that it is very suitable as I feel that it suits the genre of what my magazine is about and the way its presented and the colours involved shows that as well. One strength about my double page spread is it is very nice to look at and I feel that the colour of the writing and the colour of the background are very effective as I think the the bright blue and pink at the back allows the colour of the writing to be more effective, another strength of my magazine is it is very informative and gives information off of how it feels and what it feels like to be a hip-hop artist in the generation. The only improvement that I could think off on this double page spread would be to have more writing as there ,in my opinion isn't enough writing and more should be going on to make it a better double page spread.
This is my model on my double page spread, the way the model is looking down shows that he is in the moment and this also expresses that he is part of the Hip-Hop music scene. This follows the codes and conventions of the brief as this looks like he's part of the music scene and part of a festival.
In this brief i have been asked by The London magazine to pitch my ideas and produce a online and print based magazine based around the music scene in North London, i have also been asked to come up with a front cover and a double page spread, in the image above is my front cover, my magazine is about hip hop, the content involves a interview with a hip hop artist and a venue guide aswell. The front cover meets the client brief as it gives information about the genre and is North London based magazine which the brief asked me to do. To make my front cover i used photo shop and for my double page spread aswell. I saved them both as a Jpeg.
This task also meets the brief as it has asked me to come up with a double and front page spread which i have come up with, it has also meet the brief as i produced a magazine that gives off the vibrant music scene, this is shown by the special effects that i have used on photoshop, i made the background of my model much brighter than he was so it would embrace him and make him stand out more. When the photo was taken my model was facing the other way so i turned him around so he was looking at the Q and A that i have written about, i feel that this is very effective as it gives an indication and looks like he's reading the Q and A.
In photoshop i used many tools to make my finished piece the best it can be, one tool i used was the magnetic lasso, this helped crop my model in tot he back ground that i had chosen, this was very good however i did find it hard to use.
Another Photoshop tool I used was the eraser tool, I found this tool very effective as I could delete and areas anything that I had done wrong or made a mistake with.
