Creating a proposal and pitch for a media product U3: P1, P2, M1 U21: P2
Learning outcome 1 (U3) (U21) Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief (U3) P1 P2, M1, (U21) P2
The proposal for my original media product:
The proposal is to provide information and to spread awareness about recent and future performances happening by artists in my genre. My magazine will contain lots of key information about my genre and the type of artist involved in this Genre of music.
The purpose and objectives:
The aim and objective of my magazine is to provide a service and to inform people about recent future and upcoming events that are taking place in this type of genre. This magazine will also offer information in depth about the artist which tells the audience a bit about them if they've never heard of them before. This magazine will entertain and inform my audience about upcoming events.
Why did i choose this title ?
I chose to use HH magazine as my title as i feel that this is a simple and easy masthead for viewers to understand , i also feel that this works well with what my magazine is as its about Hip-Hop. Readers can also interpret the genre as the initials stand for hip-hip. Brand identity is also created as this will become the logo for our magazine. The use of repetition (HH) is a good technique for readers to remember it.
My Mood board :This mood board represents the whole genre its self , I feel that this sums up hip hop , and the way they are dressed and presented. Also the jewellery and the items they are wearing.
Competitors:
These two magazine are my competitors, theses both are at the high end of the magazine market and both are very popular and sell very well. My aim is to be up there with magazines like Mojo and Q magazines as they have good reputations for being very informative and for being magazines that grab peoples attention and makes then want to buy the magazines off the shelves which is where I want to be. Even though MOJO isn't my main competitor, the reason why I feel that I am competiting with this type of magazine is because it is very high end well known magazine, it might not have anything to do with the genre but I feel that this is where I want my magazine to get to and have the sales prices like MOJO and Q magazine. Having said that, MOJO may feature some of the same artists that I intend to use, therefore this could be a competitor factor. I aim to overcome this by including different content.
All the magazines above are my competitors because of how high and well known they are, however the magazine below is actually my main competitors as it is the magazine that I am competing with in my genre. I have tried to get inspiration from the magazine below as from my research I researched that this magazine has sold very well and if I make it quite similar then mine might sell as well.
The reason i feel that my competitors are Mojo and Q magazine is i want to aim for the very best and i want my magazine to thrive as much as these two magazines above do. Our prices would be completely different as Q and MOJO have very high premium prices compared to my magazine which is very reasonable and everyone can afford due to my target audience that i am targeting.

Target audience: Hip - hop as a genre of music is promoted 16-30 (Teens and adults) rather than children , due to the explicit or deep lyrics and dark subject matters often presented in the genre. A demographic is relating to the structure of the population,a demographic provides information on age, gender, income ,home ownership, marital status and many more.A demographic basically allows and finds the right target group that would fit my product/service. This is important as i want to be able to target the right group and not waste any time as time can be quite tight in the production and the making of the magazine.
My primary target audience is an age range 16-30. My demographic is teens and adults ranging from 16-30, these are students and low paid workers, this is why my price for my magazine is reasonable and affordable. Their ethnicity and race would be white, British teenagers with a class of (C2, D, E). I have chosen the lower end of this class so that I can lower the price to appeal to the low paid workers.
My secondary target audience is anyone that has an interest or likes the genre. This would include both males and females aged 31-40, of all ethnicities and races to ensure exclusivity of my magazine.
Genre: The Genre of my magazine will be Hip hop . Modern hip hop is a lot more experimental . Old school rap is still honoured though with old beats still being used and artists such as kendrick lamar still pushing the importance of rap having a meaning .I choose to use this genre of music as I really have an interest in the type of music and from my research I found that it was very popular. I also feel that there is a massive gap in the market for this as there are not many Magazines that are about this genre. This will defiantly attract my audience as i feel that it is very vibrant and catchy.
Content: My magazine will contain all information about the north London music scene and all the hip-hop music involved in north London. The content going on my front page is a title, barcode , a title with an interview with Cleo Harvey and a page about the 5 best venues in north London that play this genre. My double page spread will have an interview with Cleo Harvey, there will also be a picture with him on the double page spread. I have chosen to use these ideas as i feel that having a interview gives the audience a lot of information and one of my aims is to have a magazine that is very imformation orientated and informs people. Cleo Harvey is a upcoming 20 year old ,hip hop artist who plays in a lot of venues in the north London area. This fits the client brief because he is part of a vibrant music scene.
I have decided to choose Hip Hop as a genre as i feel that this is a very popular genre and liked by the younger generation. In addition to this it has a loyal fan base amongst people in their late thirties who grew up listening to Hip hop music in the 90s. I found this out due to the research that I did and this allowed me to make the decisions on what genre I was going to do. I have also decided to put information about festivals as well such as Wireless in Finsbury Park, the heart of north London. I want to try and make my magazine a festival guide as well as a hip hop magazine.
Colour scheme: The colours that i will be using are a range of different colours , the main ones i will be using are red and gold i feel that this represents the genre due to the research i did and the colours that were mainly on my competitors magazines. i feel that theses colours are well suited as i feel that it will grab the attention of the customer and make them buy it of the shelves. I choose to use the colour red as i feel that it is a quite a firery colour and i feel that this really represents the genre. I choose to use the colour blue as i feel that this colour is quite calm and fresh and i feel that this will really combine well with the red.
Choosing gold was quite a hard decision due to the rarity of it , however i do feel that this will go very well and combine together with the blue and gold and i feel that all the colours will work very well together. The connotations of gold are wealth and importance, which also links to my genre as many artists wear a lot of gold jewellery.
Marketing and distribution
HH magazine is intended to be a magazine featuring guides to, and articles about, music in North London. My magazine will be distributed every month. It will contain information and listings for all venues and arenas in the area, as well as features on artists that will be playing and performing there.
I will market my product by putting my magazine all over social media to spread the word, I will also be promoting the magazine by advertising on social media like Facebook due to it being so popular and most of my target audience will have the likes of Facebook and instagram. Social media is an economical way of marketing, as it uses below-the-line advertising, through likes and shares, to reach a large number of people. I will advertise my magazine on Facebook as many millions of people all over the world use this form of social media and it is easy to share on the type of social media which can help my magazine reach a bigger target audience. This fits the client brief requirements of appealing to younger people interested in vibrant music.
I will also be advertising by word of mouth where I will be telling my target age range all about the magazine; I will achieve this by having stalls at music fairs. These have increased in numbers in recent years due to the renewed interest in vinyl. Such fairs attract dedicated music fans, which will be beneficial for the marketing of my magazine.
To market my magazine we could also have stalls at music festival, e.g Wireless because this particular festival often features large numbers of Hip hop artists like Drake, lil UZI and lil Pump. Wireless is a vibrant festival, hugely popular amongst young people, meeting the requirements of the client brief. As well as the larger festivals, there are also other smaller festivals and concert venues across north London in which the magazine could be marketed. In addition to this the stalls at festivals and concert venues will have forms which will enable people to fill out a subscription on the spot.
As my magazine will be distributed every month the paper will be a good quality and I will be charging a reasonable price as it will be made very well. There is also a subscription involved. Part of my distribution will be that I am distributing it online, with my target audience being aimed at 16-30 year olds. Most people in this age group will have Facebook and Instagram. Aswell as marketing through social media, embedded links within our marketing material will take readers directly to the magazine's website where they will be able to take out subscriptions.
As my magazine is print form I intend to distribute it in newsagents and shops as this is a controlled way of distributing a product in a given area.
Resources and personnel
Resources and personnel is all the equipment and all the people that are involved in the production of the magazine, for example the photographer , and the editor. Theses are very important as you need to have these roles covered for it to be a successful production and also you need to be able to state the equipment involved as you need to be clear , this is also a very good way of being organised.

What I need to do in the management process :
For the purposes of the first edition, I will be carrying out all of the personnel tasks.
The font that I will be using for my cover lines and article is comic kings I feel that this font is good as it is quite similar to the Chequered ink, I've choose this font because I don't want my audience to get mixed up. Having different font are very important as i don't want it to be repetitive and it is to attract and main interest from the audience and to make sure its aesthetically pleasing for the viewers.
Fonts that I will be using: Chequered ink and comic kings for my masthead. I chose this because it's a big bold font and is appealing to the target audience. Also as it is at the top of the magazine it's the first thing that my readers will see.
Legal and ethical issues:
My front cover : My double page spread:
These are my sketches of what my double and front cover is going to look like, these are both very important to me as theses are plans and are going to help produce the final piece. It adhered to the codes and conventions to the music magazine in general. Also on their there is a clear masthead , main image and cover lines. I also put annotations on my double and front cover, i put what the masthead was, the main image the content of ideas for the article and many more, this is very important to do as it acts like a plan and helps and reassures me on what my front cover and double page spread is going to look like and if it doesn't meet the needs of the brief then i can change this.

Hip hop or hip-hop is a subculture and art movement developed in the Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s.
Hip hop venues in North London:
- XOYO (Shoreditch )
- Shaka Zulu ( Chalk farm)
- Hip hop zoo (Clapham)
I chose to put these in as i want to give evidence of the Genre i am talking about and where it is based as this links back to the brief as it has asked me to come up with a magazine for the nothlondon musiscscene.
These two magazine are my competitors, theses both are at the high end of the magazine market and both are very popular and sell very well. Swot analysis of my magazine:
Strengths-Provides information and informs people about the genre of Hip hop- One of my key strength i feel of my magazine is information wise i think its brilliant as it gives a big insight on the genre and basically tells you everything you need to know, this allows people that are reading HH magazine to gain valuable knowledge about the genre if they didn't know so before. It also gives a Q and A of a Hip Hop artist which also gives off information of what its like to be a hip hop artist which is very interesting.
Weaknesses-Could be seen as quite repetitive and boring as the article is going to be on the same thing through out the magazine which could lead the audience to get fed up and maybe change magazine-
Opportunities-Has the opportunity to be a successful magazine and compete with the likes of Q magazine and Mojo. If it does compete with the likes of Q magazine and mojo then it could be very successful. My magazine could also break into a new market and create new and different opportunities along the way.
Bringing out similar editions in different parts of London with the possibility of expanding the concept to other parts of the UK.
Threats- Competition from other magazines could not allow my magazine to sell well and make my target audience find other magazine that could interest them, if this happens then my aims and objectives will have not been achieved.
Comic kings
This is the font i will be using on my double page spread, i will be using this as i feel that it represents the genre that i am implying .

Legal and ethical issues:
- Make sure the content is suitable and not offensive- I will make sure that the content in my magazine isn't offence of could be taken in the wrong way at all as I want my customers to be able to recommend my magazine and make my magazine popular in the industry. To make sure all the content is suitable I will proof read over all my work and make sure all the writing makes sense and it would offend anyone in any way.
- Make sure the article isn't copyrighted and their is no plagiarism- I will make sure that the content in my magazine and the title and double page spread hasn't been produced before as i could get my self into serious trouble as copyrighting is a serious offence. I will also make sure I don't plagiarise and if I do copy some quotes and information then I will reference anything that I have put in my magazine that has already been said. To make sure I carry this out properly I will read over my article thoroughly and make sure there is no article like it. I will take all my photos and all the photos i use will be my own photos that i have taken myself.
- Make sure there is no (libel) which is making false accusations to ruin someone's reputation- I will make sure that anything I say in the magazine will not be offensive and there will be no content that some could take offence to or something that could ruin someone's reputation. I will make sure I don't do this as I will read over and over again over my article and make sure there is no offence to someone.
- Need all permission forms to be filled out ( Location release form, model release form)- I need to make sure that all my forms are filled out so that I am legally allowed to take photos as my location and take photos of my model , if I don't carry theses out then I could get in serious trouble as I haven't been given permission and if I have only been given permission by word of mouth then this is invalid as when it comes to it the person could like and I could be in a really bad situations, so this is why I need to get the permission written down on paper. If I carry this out then to resolve it I need to try and sort it out with the model as I never got permission from them so in hindsight they shouldn't be doing it .
- I also need to make sure that I don't copyright as this could get me into serious trouble as I am copying someone's work with out permission. If this does happen then this could end up giving me a very bad reputation. Additionally if i were to use copyrighted material, i could be taken to court and fined which would impact my revenue streams. To stop copyrighting I will generate my own original material and find material that hasn't been used before by another magazine. I will ensure that this is properly sourced and paid for.
